Photo: Wilson Webb/NetflixAlthough Baumbach’s childhood had little in common with the suburban characters that comprise the Gladney family, he did recognize in DeLillo’s ecstatic worldview an aesthetic crossover with the sorts of stylized ’80s movies that had first drawn his teenage self to the world of filmmaking. They included outsider comedies like Stripes and Lost in America and darker, independent dramas such as Blue Velvet, After Hours, and Blood Simple. “[These films] were often about people living comfortably in what was that sort of yuppie lifestyle, and [then] they were taken into some other world—or underworld—and transformed in the process,” he explains. “There were a lot of movies that had that theme…[and] that tension between comfort and danger.” He says that he began to see in many films from this period certain cinematic equivalences to White Noise that he could use to translate DeLillo’s obscurantist language into his own images.
