(“It was all this stuff that I was denied as a kid,” the director confesses.) White Noise’s narrative collision between comfort and danger was brought into stark relief after the pandemic descended on New York in early 2020, just as Baumbach was beginning to sketch out prospective scenes for the movie. Within months, the cracks in the social safety net were writ large across television screens: catastrophic images of quarantine, emptied neighborhoods, and ravaged supermarkets combined with presidential press conferences on bleach and horse dewormer. The world assumed the menacing irreality of DeLillo’s airborne toxic event. “It felt like a movie, going into the supermarket at times—no toilet paper, that madness that we all lived through,” he recalls. “So I had both DeLillo’s supermarkets and what we had been going through in my mind.” Like Jack and Babette, middle-class America had suddenly come face-to-face with a thanatotic force that could not be staved off by neoliberal fiscal policy or mood-enhancing psychotropics.
